A.P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd AG-Lloyd have moved another key Gemini service, ME1, connecting India and North Europe, back through the Suez Canal, instead of continuing around the Cape of Good Hope.
While Australia is not directly on this loop, the change matters for Australian importers and exporters because it affects the efficiency, capacity and pricing of the wider Asia–Europe shipping network, a corridor that influences vessel availability, equipment flows and freight rates globally.
Australia’s trade is heavily connected through Asian hub ports, particularly Singapore, Malaysia and China. When Asia–Europe services become more efficient, vessels and containers can be repositioned more effectively across global networks, including services feeding Australian ports.
A return to Suez also reduces the number of vessels tied up on longer Cape routings. That can gradually release capacity back into the market, which is relevant for Australian shippers facing equipment availability, schedule reliability and rate pressure.
ME1 is not the only Gemini service returning to the canal. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have also shifted AE5, AE11, AE12 and ME2 from the Cape of Good Hope to Suez, continuing a staged recovery of Asia–Europe routings.
Industry analysis suggests that a fuller return to Suez could save around US$1 million per round voyage for a 24,000 TEU vessel, while also improving vessel utilisation and transit performance.
For Australian cargo, the direct benefit will depend on the service and routing, but the indirect effect could be meaningful. More efficient global networks, improved container turnaround and potentially softer Asia–Europe rates over time.
This is not yet a full return to pre-crisis shipping conditions. Carriers remain cautious, and further changes will depend on security conditions in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
But for Australian businesses, the gradual return to Suez is a positive signal. It points towards a more balanced global container market, potentially better equipment availability and a more stable planning environment over the coming months.
